Best Forms of Meditation for Relieving COVID-19 Stress

Yoga and Movement 
 

If you’ve tried meditation and decided it’s just not for you, there’s a decent chance you just took an ill-fitting approach. Sitting still and emptying the mind is often peoples’ first experience of meditation, which is a shame because it’s also one of the most difficult ways to meditate. After all, if your mind is used to running a million miles a minute, jumping straight to trying to release your thoughts can be almost impossible. 
 

That’s where yoga and mindful movement come in handy. For many people, it’s a lot easier to be mindful when they have something specific to focus on. In movement, you can focus on the tension - or lack thereof - in your body. You can notice the way the air feels against your skin, or the pressure between your feet and the ground. These physical sensations work as a wonderful bridge between our minds’ urge to be busy and the goal to be mindful. 

 

Mindful Cleaning 
 

Mess and disorganization lead to anxiety, even when we think it doesn’t. However, anxiety also makes basic self-care tasks like cleaning so much harder. We tend to avoid anything that we think will exacerbate our anxiety. However, the stress of cleaning often comes, not from the act itself, but from the resistance around it. 
 

That’s what makes mindful cleaning such a powerful tool. Next time you need to reorganize or knock out the day’s chores, try to pay close attention to what you see, hear, smell, and feel while doing it. Many typical cleaning tasks, such as letting in fresh air or sorting a disorganized drawer, are actually deeply pleasant and satisfying. Pay attention, also, to any emotional relief you feel when your task is done; when you change the energy in your home, your mind is likely to follow suit. 

 

Sleep Meditation 
 

Frequent stress and anxiety can lead to poor sleep, and many people are reporting more troubles with sleep since the start of the pandemic as a result. A short mindfulness meditation before bed can help you to release your worries and prime your mind for a restful night’s sleep. 
 

This is the perfect opportunity to use a guided meditation. There are plenty of apps and programs out there that offer guided meditations, and you can find many online for free as well. Pick one that’s specifically designed to help you fall asleep. Try to find one that isn’t more than 20 or so minutes long — much longer, and the sound of the meditation may actually keep you from sleeping properly. 

 

Five Senses Meditation 
 

All of the forms of meditation mentioned above are most effective as habits. By practicing them regularly, you learn how to separate yourself from your thoughts and redirect your mind to the present moment. However, they’re not necessarily the most effective when it comes to acute moments of fear or anxiety. When you’re experiencing intense emotions that you need to address immediately, turn to the five senses meditation
 

This is a simple tool you can use to de-escalate moments where you’re experiencing extreme negative emotions. Start by taking a few deep breaths, and then turn your attention to your senses. Ask yourself what you can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. List specific sensations, either out loud or in your mind. There are many ways to do a five senses meditation, so try a few out and see which works best for you. 
 

Meditation will not solve the woes of the world, but it can make them easier to bear. Incorporate a daily mindfulness practice into your life in order to learn the skills necessary to make it through this challenging time. The things you learn will serve you well beyond this crisis, and help you cope with life’s difficulties for years to come.
