Best Ways to fight Overweight and Obesity

Jul 10, 2019

As we roam from one job to another, from one duty to another, we fail to notice that the most important aspect we need to take care of is our health and our wellbeing. It seems that thousands of years of evolution had taught us nothing. This is how we are overweight – either by forgetting about ourselves or by punishing ourselves. But how do we reverse the scale on our weighting machine? Let's focus a bit on how we can fight one of the main diseases of the 21st century – overweight and obesity, and what tools we have at hand in this fight.

Overweight and Obesity – how did I get here?
You have been giving 200% of all you had to make it, to ace your game, to be successful; or you are challenged and escaped through food and isolation. Given the amount of effort and pain that you are into, it is a miracle that pounds keep adding, and it would seem in an irreversible fashion. Overweight and obesity are, first of all, medical conditions. And they require proper attention. Whoever thought that reducing the number of bread slices would suffice is kidding him or herself. Let’s analyze the tools we have in this great war against overweight and obesity which are a great will, a change of lifestyle, pharmacological options and, the last resort, the surgical one.

Change of lifestyle, change of mindset
To challenge overweight and obesity is to challenge your lifestyle – or the so-called behavioral change. The first step for you, after acknowledging that you need assistance and are not willing to put up with the situation and improve yourself – is to get help from qualified individuals; namely, a bariatric doctor and a nutrition one.
While keeping strict management of your goals and timeframe of achievement, you need professional help to keep track of your health. The most common recommendation will be to lower the amount of food in terms of calories, and also improving the quality of your food. No more late night-snacks, no more eating when we feel sad or lonely. It is important to lose weight, as well as it is important not to regain it all over again.
But diets, even with medical supervising, will not help reach your goals alone; diets need to be accompanied by their true friend, physical activity. So having professional help from a trainer seems the third step in this endeavor. You should seek someone who’ll help you set realistic goals, and who will supervise the nature of your progress, and the balance between muscle and fat in your body.

Drugs and pharmacologic options – are they a real solution?
If the steps you took up to now did not help massively in improving your health, the next step would be to have your bariatric specialist prescribe some medical treatment to help in fighting overweight and obesity. As a footnote, when approaching the medical treatments, be sure to stick to your new healthy lifestyle, as it is crucial that your slimming down process already enabled will not backfire.
The doctor may prescribe herbal advice, or dietary supplements, destined to provide with the necessary nutrients and to lower your appetite. Also, the doctor may find solutions to increase your burnings. But what is important to keep in mind is that any drug will eventually have side effects, and may cause an imbalance in the long run. But with proper supervising from doctors, drugs can be administered to fix your health issue.
In some cases, even hormonal treatment may be prescribed.

Surgical option – last resort
Surgery is an option in severe cases that do not respond to fitness, nutrition, and pharmacological treatment. Also, if the patient suffers from extreme overweight and obesity( causes of overweight), or gains back the weight he or she lost, and also has other medical conditions that may be life-threatening, the doctor will probably resort to the surgical option.
This may involve bariatric surgery – which is a series of interventions to the digestive system such as:
Gastric bypass surgery (afterward, food will bypass your stomach),
LAGB – or Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (prevents the stomach from expanding, so you will end up eating less),
Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (your stomach will be tightened, and your intestines will be re-routed), and the Gastric sleeve procedure (part of the stomach is removed).
As technology had developed significantly, you may use the help of some weight-loss equipment; these include:
Electrical stimulation system (through laparoscopy, the doctor will place a device in your abdomen to prevent nerve blocks between the stomach and brain),
Gastric balloon system (a balloon in your stomach will be filled with salt water, to lower your appetite) and
Gastric emptying system (uses a pump to drain food from the stomach).
But bear in mind that the surgical procedures should be used only as a last resort, as surgery alone in the absence of a healthy lifestyle will not prevent the patient to get back right where he or she started from, back to overweight and obesity.

So how does one avoid this in the first place?
And after a long process of diets, fitness, medicine, and even surgery, how does one avoid to wind up in the same position?
Again, one needs to bear in mind that overweight and obesity are results – and rarely an initial condition, to begin with. So if these are symptomatic, they are indicators of other imbalances; they may be emotional or psychological ones, they may indicate some other health issues or even some suffering and pain that one is facing.
So it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, to fix or diminish the pain that we are into (or remove the causes for this pain) and to reach a balance. Also, reaching the balance of healthy self-esteem and self-love may help the patient fix and avoid these conditions.
And last, but not least, being and staying happy (which should be the topic of a different article), should not be out of focus. Because staying happy and balanced keeps us healthy, to begin with!
Stay healthy, guys! Health is sexy!
