Causes and Steps to Avoid Cough/Cold

Sep 20, 2019

Cough/cold is a very common disease. Anyone, starting from kids to adults, can be affected. Some cough/cold can be severe and  it might be difficult to understand how to cure and prevent cough and cold in some cases. It can cause symptoms of other serious diseases as well. So, we need to know the exact causes of common cold for avoiding it.

Reasons for cough/cold

Common cold and flu: These are the most common way to be affected by cough/cold. Common cold and flu are thought to be similar but they are not. Both are caused by two different viruses. Both have the same symptoms, such as a runny nose, exhaustion, body ache, sneezing, cough, etc. While it is easy to undertake steps on how to avoid common cold and cough, it is also possible, to get cured within a few days with barely any medicine. If you have flu you may experience high temperature, cough, aching joints, headache, shivers, etc. Flu can lead to throat infections, sinus, ear infection, pneumonia, and sepsis if it is not treated on time. Flu is highly contagious too. A doctor’s advice and proper antiviral medications are needed.

Asthma: Asthma is an inflammatory disease that creates difficulties for breathing and also causes other numerous problems. One of them is cough/cold. When the airways are swelled and narrowed, the muscle around them tightens, the mucus fills paths and it becomes very difficult to breathe. The oxygen cannot reach down to the lungs properly. These cause an asthma attack. Asthma can happen because of genetics, allergies, viral infections, and the environment. Coughing, tightness on the chest, and shortness of breath are experienced.

Allergic rhinitis: If a person is allergic to some objects, he/she may face this problem. When the body comes near an allergen, the body tries to protect you by releasing histamine, a natural chemical. This can cause allergic rhinitis. Runny nose, cough, sneezing, and itchy eyes are the common symptoms for that.

Tuberculosis: Tuberculosis is a highly infectious lung disease caused by TB bacteria. Severe cough, fatigue, fever, appetite loss, and weight loss are the symptoms of this disease.

Sinusitis: Anyone can develop this problem. Sinusitis or sinus infection can be caused by the common cold and flu. Bacteria or allergens are responsible for it. The infection blocks the nasal passages and sinuses. Sore throat, runny nose, high fever, cough, headache, fatigue are the symptoms.

Chronic bronchitis: This is another case of inflammation where the lining of the bronchial tubes is affected. People suffer from persistent cough and breathing problems. Two types of bronchitis are there: acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis can be caused by cold or other infections and can be cured within a few days. The chronic one stays for a long time and can cause further complications. The symptoms are severe cough, fatigue, fever, chest discomfort, sinus infection, and breathing problems.

Emphysema: This is a lung disease caused due to smoking. Tobacco, marijuana, high pollution, chemical fumes, and lung irritants are the main causes of this problem. Passive smoking is also dangerous and harmful for the lungs. People suffer from shortness of breath, severe cough, weight loss, depression, exhaustion, etc.

Pulmonary edema: In this condition, the lungs are filled with fluid and cause pulmonary congestion. The body does not get enough oxygen and suffers from shortness of breath. Coughing, irregular heart rate, fever, and headaches can be experienced.

Hookworm infection: This is not a very common cause. The culprits here are hookworm parasites that affect the lungs, skin, and the small intestine. People coming in contact with soil that has the hookworm larvae can be infected. The infection causes nausea, fever, abdominal pain (yoga for stomach disorders), etc. Sometimes, it infects the lungs and causes cough and wheezing.

Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Normally adult pneumonia is caused by bacteria. It causes inflammation in the air sacs and creates breathing problems. Coughing, fever, sweats, and chest pain can happen.

Lung cancer: Cancer is caused by abnormal cell division. Lung cancer is a severe health condition and it is really hard to treat and eventually, causes death. Cold and cough for a very long time is the common symptom. Chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, fatigue, and weakness are the other symptoms of common cold.

Laryngitis: If the vocal cord is infected or inflamed, it can cause laryngitis. Viral or bacterial infections, too much talking or yelling and alcohol consumption can cause the problem. Dry cough, throat irritation, loss, and weakened voice are a few mentionable symptoms.

Prevention:
Normally during the flu season, children are easily affected by it. There are many home remedies(home remedies for cold) such as honey, soup, ginger, turmeric, etc. which make the immune system strong. People who are suffering from flu should stay at home to prevent further spreading. Schools and daycare centers should create awareness as well. There are flu shots which are also useful. The hands should be cleaned before taking food to avoid virus spreading.

Smoking is very harmful to the whole body and system including lungs. It also harms the environment. So, it should be stopped immediately to avoid lung diseases, even cancer. Alcohol and caffeine intake should be limited too.
Asthma is a disease that needs care and attention. Inhalers and regular intake of medication are needed. The doctor's advice must be followed by dedicatedly to decrease the attacks. Avoid foods and other things that cause allergies and asthma. Dust, pollen, and dirt must be avoided.

Poor hygiene and sanitation cause hookworm infection. Proper steps should be taken to avoid it.
