Classification of joints and reasons behind joint pain

Sep 18, 2019

The human body is a very complex structure and researchers are still figuring out all the facts about it. It is a collection of numerous nerves and joints. Whenever the researchers succeed in decoding one part of the body, another part pops up in front of them like a mystery.

Joints are the connections between the bones. Joints provide support to the body and help the body move around.

Joints are also known as articulations. When the surface of two or more joints articulates with each other, joints are formed. The human body consists of around 400 joints. Joints provide both flexibility and movement to the body. Joints can be classified according to their functions and their structures.

Joints are also classified and named after the tissue that they are connected with. It can be cartilage, synovial fluid, and fibrous tissue and it can sometimes be the combination of all three of them. Functionally, the joints are classified by the degree of movement they make, bone quantity that is involved and how complex the joint is.

Classification of Joints-

Synovial Joints-

These joints are the most common joints in the body and are freely movable. They are surrounded by joint capsules which are fibrous tissues.
The synovial fluid in these capsules fills up the spaces between the capsules and also lubricates the tissues.

Ball and socket joints-

Ball and socket are responsible for all the rotation and movements of the body. Hips and shoulders are common examples of ball and socket joints.

Condyloid joints-

The joints that are situated in jaws and fingers are condyloid joints. These joints allow them to move like a joystick, but they don’t allow rotation.

Hinge joints-

As per its name, these joints act like a hinge which we generally see in the doors. Knee and elbow are the best examples of this type of joints.
There are many other classifications of the joints but these are the most common ones.

Joint pain in the body-

Often it is seen that if your joints get damaged due to any reason or if there is a disease in your joints, then the movement of that particular part becomes very difficult and you feel deep pain while moving that part of the body.
There are various conditions and various types of diseases which can result in painful joints. Such diseases include gouts, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, stains and other sorts of injuries. Joint pain is very common in most of the adults who have crossed 30 years of age. Most of the complaints about joint pain are related to knees (Knee pain Causes) and then followed by shoulder pain and hip pain. But you must take these joint pains seriously as these joint pains can happen at any of the joints of your body from ankles all the way up to the shoulders. This problem increases as your age increases.

Sometimes the joint pain is not that painful but some of the times it is too harsh that you even cannot move that part of your body. Joint pain in your body can sometimes go away in a few weeks by not doing anything as the joints they get to rest. Then again, sometimes even after taking medicines, you suffer from pain for a long time. Joint pain can be so devastating that it can really spoil and affect your peace in life. For getting rid of these joint pains many medicines, ointments, and various physical therapies are available. When you visit a doctor, he will first try to find out the reason for the joint pain in your body. Only after finding the exact reason, he can start your treatment. The ultimate goal of the doctor is to reduce that pain in the joints and preserve the joint functionality.

Treatments for joint pain-

Medications-

There are many nonsteroidal drugs like ibuprofen, naproxen, etc. that are available in the market which can be used to treat moderate to severe joint pain with swelling and they are really very beneficial in removing the pain. Cox-2 inhibitors which can be considered as the new generation of non-steroidal drugs are also available in the markets and are good for pain relief but all of these medicines except for Celebrex has been removed from the market now. This is because a regular and heavy dose of these medicines increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be used if you have mild joint pain and no swelling. But you should remain very careful while using these medicines because combining them with alcohol consumption can cause liver diseases as well.

Various topical agents-

There is a substance found in chili peppers known as Capsaicin which can be helpful in giving you relief from the arthritis pain. Substance P which sends the pain signals to the brain is blocked by capsaicin and capsaicin also trigger chemical release called endorphins which blocks the pain. The only side effect of capsaicin cream is that in the area where it is applied it burns that area and a spot is formed there.

Injections to get rid of joint pain-

Some problems in some individuals are so complex that they do not get relief from these tropical and oral medications. For those individuals, what doctors do is they make a combination of steroids and inject it directly in the joint with an interval of three to four months. Injecting steroids in the body is an effective way to get rid of the pain but it has temporary effects in most of the situations.

Physical therapy to remove joint pain-

The most effective way to get rid of joint pain is physical therapy. By consulting a physical therapist and by doing the therapy that he suggests, the muscles surrounding the joints can be strengthened, the range of motion can be increased, and the joints can be stabilized.

Various therapies used by the therapist nowadays include heat therapy, cold therapy and manipulation and stimulation of nerves by electric shocks. You should also focus on removing the pressure from your joints, especially for those who are overweight or obese. They should try to reduce their weight by exercising or yoga which is one of the most effective ways to reduce weight. Also, they should try to perform low impact exercises which do not have severe effects on their joints. Yoga (Yoga Stretching), Swimming and bicycling are great exercises too since they allow you to exercise the joints without putting too much pressure on them.
