Corporate Wellness – What Is It and Why Is It Important?

Sep 03, 2019

Running a company or a business is quite tricky and there would be various kinds of hurdles that should be overcome if you need to succeed. And one of these hurdles is to ensure that the people who work for you are able to bring out the best in them. This would only be possible if they are healthy. This is where corporate wellness comes into the picture. In fact, there are various corporate wellness programs but as a company head or a manager, you would have to find the best one for your employees.

What exactly is corporate wellness?

There are various definitions to the concept and hence it would be difficult to fully understand it. But the simplest meaning is that corporate wellness refers to the well-being of the body and the mind of all the employees in a corporate company or office. In other words, it is simply the methods adopted to ensure that all the employees are able to maintain their health.

But in many cases, corporate wellness meagrely gets shrunk in the process of treating diseases and health issues. The truth is that corporate wellness is something that is much more. The aim is that all the employees should be in good health so that they would be able to work at their maximum potential without failing in any manner. Hence the costs that the company would have to spend as a part of corporate wellness programs would be returned as the work output from the employees themselves.
These days, corporate wellness should also address various problems that are caused due to the long-term occupation of the person. Some of such health problems are diabetes, anxiety, stress, etc. there should be effective programs so that the employees do not get these issues. The truth is that a large number of working days would be lost if the employees get one of these chronic health issues.

Knowing about the pillars of corporate wellness

The pillars refer to the major things that should lie at the foundation of the concept of corporate wellness. The first and most important thing to consider is the health and safety of the employees. There should be all kinds of safety measures so that the workers are completely safe from accidents while in the work. A work-related injury should be avoided at all costs. Also, there should not be any hindrance when it comes to the daily physical working of the person.

The next pillar is the management of bad health. There are chances for employees to suffer from various kinds of health issues. Every one of these should be solved and there should be no financial issue during times like these. Hence, it is important to cover the medical expenses of the employees by taking medical insurances for them.
the third and the most important pillar is the prevention. Some of the methods that can ensure prevention are the establishment of a site in the work site, provide smoking and drinking awareness, etc. Also, there should be various entertainment programs and these are very important when it comes to the prevention of the mental issues associated with the employees.

The importance of a leader Just like in all fields, corporate wellness, too, would do very good if there is a talented leader at the front. So, in every company, there should be a person who is responsible for the wellness of the employees. In most companies, this is carried out by the human resources department which is fine but for maximum effectiveness, an extra person is necessary. This person would have the responsibility to stay beside all the employees and take care of their well-being. If things are not favourable then he or she would have to arrange for wellness programs to bring back the well-being.

Ask for opinions and feedbacks

Since the employees are the people who would be gaining from the corporate wellness programs, it would be wise to consult them for their opinion before making the decisions. They would be many feedbacks and the aim of the wellness programs is to ensure that they stay healthy.

The cost factors

It is true that the company would have to spend a considerable amount of money in order to conduct wellness programs. But if properly planned, various agreements can be reached with insurance companies and other similar organizations and this would help the company to keep the cost at minimal.

The different corporate wellness programs

  • Insurance coverage certainly ensures that the employees do not have to struggle for money when it comes to an emergency related to health. Insuring the employees’ families would be an even better scheme. This would relieve the employee from all tensions regarding illness and he or she would be able to work at his or her full potential for the company. The loyalty that he or she has for the company would also be enhanced by a large factor.
  • Health check-ups would be quite useful when it comes to recognizing the various health issues of the employees. The more frequent the check-ups are, the better. This is because the company would only be able to plan for the correct wellness program if the various health issues that daunt the employees are diagnosed.
  • Physical fitness is key when it comes to corporate wellness. It is ideal if all the employees who work for the company are physically fit. So, an onsite gym would be quite useful. These should also include various training programs.
  • Mental health is perhaps the most important when it comes to corporations. Hence, it is important to conduct entertainment programs every now and then so that the employees would be able to relax and get rid of all the stress and anxiety.
