The relevance of yoga in the workplace

The first and foremost question that arises when one hears “corporate yoga” is does yoga belongs in the workplace? And the answer to this question is obviously yes because, in order to create an environment of efficiency and wellness, one needs to connect with their co-workers and should be able to works without enduring extreme stress. Practicing corporate yoga for relaxing and concentration really benefits the company as well as the individual, it enables one to face stressful situations with ease and proper management. It also helps employees to connect on another level instead of just being colleagues. Therefore, yoga practices do belong in the workplace and every company should try their level best to introduce such activities in the workplace.

Benefits of yoga in the workplace

  • Helps staff members to feel better: Being seated all day in front of a screen makes an individual lazy which ultimately results in health issues due to which one takes sick leaves. Practicing yoga in the corporate workplace avoids such problems and it also soothes one’s mind. It provides the employees to step away from their desks and log into their own bodies.

  • Reduction in negative behavior: Being a form of meditation yoga helps one to calm their ego and open up their perspective. Such activities change the environment of the workplace from tensed to a more collaborative one. These practices revamp the ways in which departments cooperate.

  • Better employee life: Practicing yoga not only keeps one’s mind fresh, but it also helps them to keep their physical attributes in proper condition. The stress caused due to one’s job can produce many physical problems such as eating disorders, obesity, heart diseases, and the like, and these all are kept away by introducing yoga in the workplace.

  • Company performance: The members of a company practicing corporate yoga have more innovative ideas, are highly concentrated on the task at hand, have high morale, and are more productive as well as creative. This is possible because using such programs helps one to let go of unnecessary things and focus solely on the task at hand. This really benefits the company as the workforce becomes more efficient.

  • Provides incentive to workers: Using corporate yoga for motivating employees is a very promising thing as it enables them to unwind and release stress. Such activities impart employees with an extra surge of energy which makes them feel refreshed at work. Conducting small yoga session per-week really shows the improvements the workers have made because of being in a more stress-free environment.

Workplace yoga on an individual level

Sometimes, one might not notice any significant developments in themselves even if they are following the company’s protocol for attending the mandated yoga sessions. This usually happens when a person does not take away the most important lesson “to apply these techniques in their daily life”, even just for a time period of 5 minutes. What the employees mostly do is, show-up at the mandated weekly session and feel really good for a couple of days and then they return to their miserable self.
There are numerous ways one can adopt individually to avoid such circumstances and see significant results, but the best way to do is via “chair yoga”. This is a type of corporate yoga that an individual can execute even while working. All one requires to do this is his/her own body and a chair (Yes, just a Chair!). Even if an individual is extremely busy, they can still do chair yoga while working. This yoga method promotes energy boost, stress relief, and increased concentration along with smart decision making.
Even if a company does not practice corporate yoga an individual can practice chair yoga in order to refresh themselves. It just takes about a time period of 5 to 8 minutes, which will in return increase one’s efficiency for a long time.

Poses to practice chair yoga

  • Neck Stretch: Constantly focusing on a monitor can be literally a pain in one’s neck. Using this stretch one can easily relax their neck and back muscles. While being seated in a chair tilt your head towards your left shoulder (as far as it goes without any force). Now, place your left hand on your right year and let the arm gently stretch your neck. Hold and take 4 deep breaths, then switch sides.
  • Wrist stretch: Non-stop typing can result in tiered wrists. The best way to instantly relieve tension in the wrists is through this stretch. Interweave your fingers with your palms facing outwards. Keeping your arms at shoulder height stretch your arms as far as possible, now hold this position, and take a few deep breaths.
  • Seated twist pose: Sitting for long intervals of time at a desk, with improper posture, leads to back pain and spine disfigurement. This pose opens one's chest, back and shoulder, relieving their spine of discomfort and corrects their posture. While being seated, place your right hand on your left thigh and rotate your upper torso to the left while looking over your left shoulder. Hold for 4 deep breaths, switch sides, and repeat.
  • Side lean: This pose promotes tension release from one’s shoulder and intercostals muscles. In a seated position on a chair raise both arms over your head and then interlace your finger with palms facing upwards. Now, slowly bend from your hip to your left side. Hold and take 4 deep breaths and then repeat on the other side.
  • Seated pigeon pose: Being seated for a long period can cause stiffness in legs and hips. This pose promotes mobility and relieves tightness in the hips and legs. It also helps with back pain. Place your left ankle on your right knee. Now, interlace your fingers with palms facing forward and start leaning forward, go as far as your body allows. Hold that position and take 4 deep breaths, switch the position of your legs and repeat.

Conclusion

Corporate yoga is an essential part of the workplace which each and every company should opt for because it does not benefit the life of an employee in the workplace, but it also benefits the company itself. And even if a company does not offer such practices and an individual can take certain measures to improve his own workplace.
