Eating disorders: The solution lies in the food

In this present generation, people with poor health and various health issues are quite more when compared with the situation that existed a few decades earlier. The major reason for this is the food items that people consume and the fact that the amount of physical effort that people put in has reduced drastically. Thanks to the change in food habits, eating disorders are quite common among the people these days. This should be considered as a health issue and a suitable treatment method should be adopted in order to return to a healthy state.

Knowing about eating disorders

Just like any other type of health issue, the most important part with the treatment of eating disorders is the diagnosis. You should be able to understand that you are suffering from the problem. And for this, you should be able to recognize the symptoms and signs that show up. Knowledge about the different types of eating disorders is also quite important.

The major types of eating disorders are:

  • Anorexia nervosa: This is a problem in which the patient would not eat even what is required by the body. The reason for this is that the patient would be under a lot of stress about gaining weight. Also, he or she would have a very bad image of his or her body. The results of this health issue are that the weight of the person would drop drastically. Also, the blood pressure might drop down to alarming levels. In extreme cases, the patients would starve themselves and then would carry out hard exercises. This might even lead to cardiovascular problems.
  • Bulimia nervosa: This is the opposite of anorexia. And hence the person would not be able to control once he or she starts eating. So, a lot of food would be consumed by such a patient. But the difference from Anorexia patients is that Bulimia patients would start trying to get rid of the excess food that they have consumed through drastic methods. The methods might be vomiting, very hard and excessive exercises, pills that would help to lose weight, usage of laxatives, etc. All of these methods are not ideal ones to lose weight. Also, these patients would be usually of average body weight.
  • Binge eating: This is the most common kind of eating disorder. This is nothing but the inability to control eating. The person would not be able to stop once the required amount is consumed. Unlike Bulimia, these people would not do anything in order to get rid of the food that is consumed. There would be a guilty feeling about the eating but the patient usually does not do anything about it. Results would be obesity and cardiovascular problems.
  • ARFID: This cannot be called as an actual eating disorder. The patient would not be able to eat an adequate amount of food because of the food's smell or taste. He or she would be easily uninterested in the food.

Fast foods are no good

Eating disorder is one health issue that is not caused by any particular kind of food item. On the other hand, it is more of a mental issue than a physical health issue. The person should be corrected in the mind. So, the best thing is to prevent such a situation.
The reason for the increased number of patients for eating disorders is that people have begun to consume fast food items quite frequently. These fast food items have a tendency to make people want more. Also, in some people, these fast food items would cause a feeling of stress and feeling that the person might get obese. Also, these food items do nothing good for a person's health. Eating disorders would show up after prolonged consumption of such fast food items. Eating them every now and then wouldn’t be a problem but continuous eating should be avoided.

Alcohol and smoking

There are quite a number of misconceptions that alcohol would be able to solve eating disorders. But this is not at all a fact. Alcohol consumption on a regular basis would only worsen any kind of health issue and this is a fact that is proven. Alcohol consumption would increase the appetite and if this is above a particular level, there are chances for the person to develop eating disorders.
The fact stands with smoking as well. If you are a chain smoker then you are likely to have a very poor appetite and the amount of food that you consume would be irregular and at most times would be less than what is required. This is exactly what an eating disorder is.  All these are apart from the lung related problems that smoking brings along.

Be smart parents:

Most parents would make their children eat a lot and this is based on the misconception the baby or child would have to consume a lot in order to grow properly. But the truth is that the child only requires a particular amount of food and nutrients in order to grow. Everything excess would be converted to fat and the child would grow obese. This would cause a great deal of mental and physical problems for the child and hence can lead to eating disorders in the future. As parents, make sure that you feed your children smartly.

Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables

Binge eating is not having control over the eating process. Such people would not be able to stop eating. Hence the best method is to consume fruits and vegetables. Make salads and other healthy food items and then consume these when you feel like eating a lot. The advantage is that you get all the required nutrients and also you would be slowly able to get rid of the eating disorder. Eat a fixed amount of all regular kinds of food and when it comes to excess eating, go for fruits and vegetables.
