Natural Foods to Get Rid of Headaches

Headaches are bad news since they can cause you to stay in bed the whole day because of the pain, preventing you from performing your daily duties. There are many types of headaches and a variety of medicines are available in the market which are made to provide relief from them. In some instances though, a headache can recur, especially if you take something that is only designed to target the pain and not the reason behind it.

More and more health-related studies are being conducted today that indicate the relationship between a person’s diet and his or her headaches. This is because there are certain foods that can trigger allergies and certain sensitivities that would lead a person to have a headache. In relation to that, it is wise to learn more about the foods to avoid and the foods to choose to get rid of headaches for good.

  1. Nuts and peanut butter – Peanut butter and nuts are loaded with the substance called tyramine and this is the reason why it is best to avoid them if you want to stop your headache. It is natural for certain food items to contain tyramine and for people who are sensitive to it, this substance will cause pain. To ensure that you are not avoiding this delicious snack unnecessarily, keep a headache notepad. Record all the times you have a headache and jot down the foods you consumed that may have triggered it. This way, if you ate nuts before a headache, then you can confirm that it is indeed the culprit behind the pain.
  2. Alcoholic beverages – If you drink alcohol regularly, you probably are already aware that it causes migraines. Getting a “hangover” after a night of fun and laughter with friends is quite common and it is actually not because of the fact that you slept late but it is caused by the alcohol that you consumed. Pain in the head occurs after drinking alcohol because it increases blood flow to the brain. Alcohol also contains sulfite preservative which is known to cause headaches. Moreover, drinking alcohol dehydrates the body which is a common cause of migraines.
  3. Hot dogs – Not only are these “not-so-hot” hot dogs known for being unhealthy because of its food coloring but they also carry with them a good amount of preservatives. These substances are loaded with nitrates which are known to cause headache and can trigger blood vessel vasodilation. Other food items similar to hot dogs include bacon, sausage, luncheon meat, pepperoni, and salami. If you noticed, all of these are processed meat food items.
  4. Chocolates – For certain people, eating chocolates can cause a reaction on their bodies that lead to migraines or sinusitis. The substance in chocolates that can trigger headaches is called phenylethylamine. This substance is also in cacao and it triggers activity in the blood vessels which causes the headache.
  5. Other food items to avoid – Dried fruits, ice cream, Chinese food, certain cheeses, junk foods, onions, and dried fish.

It is important to reiterate that a headache notepad is essential to track which foods trigger your headache. This would make it easier for you to track which foods to avoid and which foods to eat.
Aside from avoiding food items though, there are foods that you can eat which would help you when it comes to headaches. Here are a number of them that you can add to your grocery list.

Best Foods that can help cure Headaches

  • Sweet potatoes A food has to have anti-inflammatory properties in order for it to help you in the fighting of a headache and sweet potatoes are on top of the list. They are also loaded with vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamins B1, B2 and B6, phosphorus, potassium, niacin, pantothenic acid, manganese and copper which are all essential in taking care of inflammations.  
  • Lettuce and spinach – If you love to eat salads, you have to load it with leaves of spinach and lettuce, especially when you have a headache. These are not just loaded with nutrients but are also filled with moisture. Keep in mind that one of the most common causes of headaches is actually dehydration. Thus, if you were up all night, drinking and partying with your friends, you are probably dehydrated. Eat a plate of salad with lettuce and spinach to help relieve your headache.
  • Salmon – When you have a headache, there is a big chance that certain blood vessels or your sinuses are inflamed. To counter this, you need to eat salmon. Salmon is actually one of the best foods that offer anti-inflammatory properties. It is due to the fact that it has omega-3 fatty acids and minerals known for its ability to reduce inflammation. Having two or three servings a week of this delicious food also offers large amounts of B-Complex vitamins which are known to provide pain relief, especially for migraines.
  • Liver and heart from meat or chicken Some people may not be able to eat them but they actually taste good and also contains a lot of essential nutrients to cure headaches, especially a nutrient called CoQ10. This nutrient, combined with minerals, high levels of the B vitamins and vitamin A will fight off inflammation and provide headache relief. Therefore, it is time to be adventurous and try them out real soon.
  • Fruits – Fruits like watermelon are known to have hydrating effects which will prove beneficial to you if you have a headache that is caused by dehydration. They are also filled with nutrients that can take care of the inflammation.
