Types of Headache and Rid Of It With Natural means

Jul 20, 2019

The pain in the head and the upper neck is referred to as a headache. Hardly anyone in the world has escaped the clutches of headaches. Headaches can be categorized into two types: primary and secondary. In the primary headache, the headaches can occur due to tension, migraine or cluster headaches. Most of these headaches do not pose any serious threat to the body but proper medical attention should be taken if the headache is unusual, severe, if it does not get cured by treatment, or it becomes worse with time.

For further diagnosing the problem, the doctor may ask for an MRI, head CT, etc. to evaluate and investigate the issue. The doctor may try to find out the triggers for the headache that you are suffering from. The triggers can be stress or certain foods that you are taking and after getting to the root cause of headaches, he may suggest you some medication, change in lifestyle or certain pain relievers to get rid of it.

Types of Headaches

Primary Headaches- These types of headaches are not associated with any medical condition or disease. Primary headaches mainly include tension, migraine and cluster headaches. The symptoms of tension-induced primary headaches include pressure and tightness which start from the back of the head and upper neck and then slowly towards the whole brain.

Secondary Headaches- These headaches are caused by an injury or an illness within your body. For example: bleeding within the brain, infection in the brain or a brain tumor.

Cluster Headaches- These types of headaches occur in a cluster which can happen over a period of several weeks or months and then does not occur for months or years. When the headache begins, the sufferer may experience pain in several intervals within a day and this may last for 30 to 90 minutes. This headache is just like an attack which generally occurs at the same time of each day. The pain experienced in this is quite sharp and penetrating. The symptoms of this pain include deep penetrating pain behind or around one of the eyes, stuffy nose and water coming from the eyes.

Migraine headaches- In this headache, the pain is concentrated towards one part of the head. The pain is quite intense and throbbing. The migraine pain can continue up to several hours or can be up to three days. Migraine pain is often accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound, vomiting and nausea. Visual disturbance called an aura can also be because of migraine. In aura, you may see wavy lines, blurry vision, flashing lights, etc. and it may affect the visibility power of your eyes.

Most of the headaches people suffer from are not very severe and they do not indicate any serious medical problems as these types of headaches are occasional and they resolve quickly, but some headaches are intense and are very painful. If your headache is quite intense, then you should seek medical attention.

Getting Rid of Headaches

Several medications are there which target on relieving headache, but these can have various harmful effects on the body of an individual, so it is suggested to firstly go for the natural ways and then for medicines. Some of the natural ways to get rid of headaches are as follows.

Drinking Adequate Water

Sometimes if your body is not hydrated properly, it can lead to a headache. Chronic dehydration can be the root cause of tension headaches and migraines. If people drink an adequate amount of water, it has been seen that the headache gets lowered down within 30 min to 1 hour. If your body is dehydrated, then you may also lose your concentration and it can also cause you irritability because of which it seems that the symptoms become worse. To avoid dehydration headaches, drink as much as healthy water throughout the day and focus on eating the food which has an ample amount of water in it.

Sleep properly

If you do not get an adequate amount of good sleep, then it may also result in a headache. If you do not sleep properly, headache is not the only problem you will get but you may also experience various other types of issues with your body. In one of the studies which were carried out to compare headache frequency in people who get proper sleep of around six to seven hours a day and those who do not get proper sleep. It was seen that the people who get a sound sleep without any disturbances are having fewer chances of headaches. People who do not sleep properly tend to have more regular and severe headaches. However, if you sleep too much then also there are chances that you may suffer from headache. So, target to get a sleep of around seven to nine hours a day.

Magnesium Intake

Magnesium is considered a very important mineral for the body as it helps the body in several functioning. Magnesium helps in controlling the blood sugar and transmission of nerves.

Magnesium can also be considered as an effective remedy for headaches. Several studies have shown that people who are having a deficiency of magnesium in the body have frequent migraine headaches when compared to people who do not have such deficiency of magnesium in their body. It has been observed in several patients of migraine headaches that if they take around 600 mg of oral magnesium per day on a regular basis, then it reduces the frequency and severity of migraine headaches in the patients. However, in some of the patients, taking magnesium supplements can cause digestive issues. So, it is advisable to take a small dose of it and then gradually increase the dose for treating migraine headaches symptoms.

Try B complex Vitamins

You might be wondering what the B-Complex vitamins are. These are micronutrients which are water soluble and play many important roles in the body. For example, they turn food into energy by contributing to the neurotransmitter. Some of these B vitamins can also have a protective effect against headaches. As per various studies, vitamin B supplements such as B12, folate, and riboflavin are helpful in reducing headache symptoms. All the eight of the B vitamins are there in the B-complex. It's a safe and cost-effective way to get some relief in headache pain.
