Sep 16, 2019

Suffering from a headache takes a toll on the entire body and at the moment, the sufferer can’t possibly figure out the real cause of the headache. Most of the times, even after the headache is gone, you can’t figure out the cause of it. You can experience headaches due to a lot of reasons, ranging from your eating habits to your environment. Stay with us to know about the different types of headaches and how you can get rid of them with a simple meditation- yoga.

Different types of Headaches-

The most common types of headaches are sinus, tension and migraine induced headaches. Infection or unusual pressure in the sinus causes sinus headaches. Headaches are also caused due to tightened hand muscles and neck tension. The migraine pain occurs due to the pain in the supersensitive nerves of the brain.
But why do these muscles get tightened? Or why would there be a pain in the brain nerves? The questions are not properly understood as of yet since the reason for this may vary from individual to individual.
Some of the most common trigger points of headaches are-

  1. Stress- If your life is way too stressful, you might observe the tension headaches. Many doctors who are treating various patients of tension headache recommend the patients to be stress-free at all cost. Complications in the office or personal life can cause stress. This stress initiates the tension headache and the patient is in pain all the time due to this.

2- Food that contains monosodium glutamate or alcohol in it- Foods such as chocolates and processed foods contain monosodium glutamate in them which triggers a headache in individuals. They should be avoided by patients having tension headaches. Also, many cough syrups contain alcohol in it. People start taking these syrups for removing their cough but then they become habituated to them, they start acting like a trigger for their headache. In fact, once they become habituated to these syrups, they get headaches for not taking them.
There are many other reasons which lead to headache like hunger, environmental changes, eating habits, etc.

How To reduce Headache by Yoga-

Yoga can be helpful for you in getting rid of a headache. As we know that most of the headaches are due to tension, regular yoga practice can help you out from getting rid of your stress and tension which will help you in getting rid of your headaches. Neurotransmitter imbalance can be the real catalyst for headaches. Many of the experts have this opinion that not sitting in the correct posture or having muscular pain can increase the headache. If you pay attention to the posture in which you sit and sleep, then it can really prevent you from strain in the shoulders, back of your head and forehead which can really be beneficial in reducing the chances of headaches in the long run.

If you want to relieve tension in the neck and head then you should stretch and strengthen the upper torso muscles Adho Mukha Svanasana. This is a part of the hath yoga practice which can be really helpful as it will put this balance in the most appropriate way.

Now let’s discuss some of the Asanas of Yoga which involves gentle stretching and will open the area of your body which includes your neck, back, and shoulders.
