How to get rid of headaches easily

Sep 18, 2019

Most, if not all, people experience headaches every now and then. Some individuals are more prone to it while others have pain in the head rarely. A headache is a nuisance and there are a number of different types that affect people all around the globe.

Headaches vary and so does the treatment options. Some can be treated by a simple over-the-counter pain reliever which takes care of it in just short period of time while other forms of headache may require a longer treatment period. Still, there are those that occur due to underlying health issues which can cause pain repeatedly and should be dealt with urgently.

Here are some types of headaches and their telling signs that should be able to help you determine what you have.

  1. Tension – Tension headaches are considered as one of the most common as most people have them occasionally. It is usually caused by bad posture, poor sleep, dehydration, eye strain, and loud noises and in most cases, stress. This type of headache will present itself as a dull and constant pain which you can feel on both the left and right sides of your head.
  2. Migraines – The pain that a migraine is associated with occur in just one side of your head. The pain is intense and you know you have it if bright lights seem to bother you more than it did before. If the pain lingers for an extended period of time, it may make you feel dizzy and could even lead to nausea. Other signs of migraine are numbness, seeing spots, difficulty speaking and the feeling of being stuck with pins and needles on your head. Migraines have a tendency to recur. For instance, you may feel relieved for a couple of hours but then it attacks again. Some may even have to endure it for 2 to 3 days. A migraine can be triggered by dehydration, stress, certain medicines, and food ( Foods to Get Rid of Headaches).
  3. Cluster – You probably have a cluster headache if you have a runny nose, watery eyes and swollen eyelid and are sensitive to high volumes of sound and light. Some people also become more agitated when they have cluster headaches. This headache is more common in men than in women and the pain sensation is usually around the eye or behind it. A cluster headache usually occurs due to alcohol consumption and smoke inhalation.
  4. Sinus – This type of headache occurs when your sinuses are swelling. This inflammation is usually caused by allergies or infection. You most likely have a sinus headache if the pain is accompanied by a nasal discharge that is colored yellow or green. It comes with a runny nose and the pain is felt around your eyes, forehead, and cheeks. If you have allergic rhinitis and you feel your head aching, it could most probably be a sinusitis infection.

It is a good thing that there are a number of treatment options when it comes to headaches. Below are a number of therapies to choose from.

Painkillers

There are a good number of over-the-counter drugs you can take in order to gain relief from a headache. Although many do not require a doctor's prescription such as paracetamol, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen, it is still wise to consult your physician about it since some come with certain side effects. These types of drugs are taken for milder forms of headaches. When a headache is associated with a lot of other symptoms or it lingers longer than usual, higher types of pain relievers may be needed and these would require a physician’s prescription.

Antibiotics

Antibiotic treatment may be required if your doctor confirms that you have a sinusitis infection. This is to ensure that the bacteria causing the infection is killed resulting in subsiding of the swelling around your sinuses. You may also have to take decongestants along with the antibacterial medicine for this to work.

Acupuncture

A number of alternative treatments have become available today in dealing with headaches and one of them is acupuncture. Most people are familiar with this since it can also be done in order to relieve someone of stress and tension. Acupuncture involves needles that are thin which are placed in key points around your body. All you have to do is to visit an acupuncture clinic and tell the experts why you are there so that they can design the therapy best suited for you.

Get hydrated

There are many instances when a headache is caused by simple dehydration. You may not be aware of it but lots of activities you go through on a daily basis can render you dehydrated. For example, walking in the sun without drinking lots of water can make you dehydrated in just a short while. Aside from that, eating chips or other food items that are high in salt content can also cause the same. Moreover, alcohol consumption is also one of the most common causes of dehydration which is why hangovers are usually accompanied by headaches. This is due to dehydration and the best thing to do is to counter it by drinking adequate amounts of water every day. It is also wise to limit alcohol consumption and focus more on consuming foods that are filled with moisture like fruits.

Sleep

Poor sleeping habits can eventually lead to headaches aside from other illnesses that you put yourself at risk when you don't have enough rest. Sleep deprivation will cause a lot of stress which just makes your body more susceptible to a lot of diseases and of course headaches. Get enough sleep each night and look for ways to improve its quality. Some examples would include going through yoga (yoga for headaches), exercising, listening to binaural music and so on.

Do not forget that some foods also trigger headaches, especially those that contain substances like phenylethylamine and nitrates. Eat those that contain a lot of water and essential nutrients that would cure and prevent a headache.
Now that you are more aware of the available options, you are more capable of battling it yourself. Don't hesitate to visit your doctor, especially if your headaches recur and also discuss with him the many natural ways of dealing with the pain.
