Getting To Know About Thyroid, Thyroid Problems, & Prevention Methods

Health problems in the present generation are more at large when compared to the previous generation. The two major reasons for this is that the people have changed their lifestyle and now the food items that people consume are quite different when compared to the food style that existed a few decades back. And when it comes to the most common health issues, thyroid problems are among the top performing diseases. There are numerous treatment techniques to solve these issues but the best method is to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

What is the thyroid?

Actually, thyroid is the name of a gland present in the human body. This particular gland has an immense role to play in the overall metabolism of the body. The shape of the gland is like that of a butterfly. It is situated on the front part of the neck. To be specific, it is located below the Adam's apple. It has two lobes and there is a thin tissue that separates the two lobes. The hormone that the gland primarily produces is called the thyroxine. In fact, one of the materials manufactured from this hormone is the most active hormone in the entire human body.

Just like all the different glands in the body, the production of the hormone and its functioning is controlled through a feedback system that involves the brain. The pituitary gland is the one that produces the hormone that regulates all the other glands in producing their respective hormones. In short, the brain decides when the thyroid has to function more and produce more thyroxine.

Thyroid problems

All the health issues that cause the thyroid gland to malfunction or under-function can be categorized under thyroid disorders. For example, if there is something wrong with the tissues of the pituitary gland, then the production of the thyroxine hormone would be affected drastically.
Hence there are various kinds of thyroid problems:

  • Hypothyroidism: The major symptoms of this disorder are fatigue and poor concentration power. The effect is the very low production of the thyroxine hormone.

 

  • Hyperthyroidism: The symptoms that can be used to diagnose this problem are nervous feelings, increased heart rate, etc. The problem results in the increased production of the thyroxine hormone and hence the metabolism would be increased.

 

  • Goiter: this is the problem in which the size of the thyroid gland increases and the result would be the enlargement of the neck in the worst cases. This problem can also occur along with the previous two thyroid problems.

 

  • Thyroid Nodules: these are small lumps that are present on the thyroid gland. There may be a single nodule or there might be multiple nodules. If the nodules are uncontrollably enlarged, then the surrounding structures in the body would have to undergo stress.

 Prevention methods to avoid thyroid problems

  • Always wear a thyroid collar when you undergo an X-ray. This should be made sure of when you are undergoing an x-ray for your spine, head or chest. In many clinics and hospitals, the thyroid collar would not be provided. The collar looks like a turtle neck and there would be a lining of lead inside the collar. The aim is to protect the thyroid gland from any kind of radiation exposure during the x-ray procedure. This is very important because this gland is perhaps the most sensitive part of the head and the neck combined. And radiation exposure can lead even to cancer. So, make sure that you ask for a thyroid collar when you want to undergo an X-ray.

 

  • Quit smoking cigarettes: Everyone knows that smoking is injurious to health. The cigarette has numerous toxins that would reduce the production of thyroxine. One example is the Thiocyanate. This component is capable of even blocking the production of the thyroxine. The problem can also be the excessive production of the thyroxine. So you should make sure that you quit smoking once and for all. In fact, there are various methods to quit smoking and you just need to find a way.

 

  • Always go for a regular health checkup: The important thing about all kinds of health disorders is that the problem should be identified at the earliest. One of the simplest tests to identify whether the person has a thyroid disorder is the ‘Thyroid Neck Check’. The test would be able to identify if there are lumps or bumps on the thyroid gland. Also, you should consult with a specialist doctor with the result.

 

  • Thyroid disorders could be due to various different issues. One such issue is that the level of selenium would be under the required amount. Ensuring that you take a balanced diet on a regular basis would be enough in order to maintain a healthy nutrient concentration level in your body. But a balanced diet is not quite simple to maintain and hence the easier method would be to consume nutrient supplements. When it comes to thyroid issues, selenium is quite important. Even if you are having a balanced diet, a supplement would be able to enhance your immune system.

 

  • Avoid excessive exercises: This is something that would vary from one person to another. If you are a person with a lot of stamina, then you would be able to endure long exercises. But if you are not such a person then make sure that you say no to such kinds of excessive types of exercises.

 

  • Eat at regular interval: Not eating at the appropriate times would have a very bad effect on the thyroid gland. The production of thyroxine would become irregular and this is not something that is favorable. There are various diets in which you would have to starve. Such diets would have to avoid at all costs. Make sure that you eat at least small amounts of food during the appropriate times.
