In life, depending upon the type of things on which you focus the most, the ‘chakras’ get activated accordingly. The world is a composition of energies. Not only us human beings but in fact the entire universe operates with the energy.

Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means a wheel or a disk. In the dictionary of Yoga, meditation & Ayurveda, the term refers to the wheel of energy in our body. It is like a swirling wheel of energy where matter and consciousness meet. This invisible energy or prana keeps us vibrant, healthy and active.

Chakras are the essence of our being or the loci of life energy. They help to regulate all bodily processes, from organ function to the immune systems (yoga for immune system) and even the emotions.

If our chakras are healthy and balanced, we are healthy and stable too!


There are mainly 7 chakras positioned in our body from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. The chakras have their vibrational frequency that is illustrated through a specific colour and governs particular functions which make the essence of our being.

 Knowing about the balance and imbalance of these chakras can contribute to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati writes in his book, Kundalini Tantra Chakras control the circulation of prana (throughout) the entire human structure."

These chakras are the nerve centres across the body which necessitates within us the smooth flow of energy (Vortex of Energy). Functioning of these Chakras is vital and intricate. Such energy communicates with the body via biological systems such as the nervous system and the endocrine glands, to keep it balanced and healthy.

It is essential that these swirling wheels stay opened, aligned, and fluid. Any blockage will obstruct the flow of energy. Just think of a clogged bathtub drain with too much of hair. It will eventually be a home for bacteria, mites, and moulds. Similarly, it is necessary to keep open the chakras for maintaining our overall health. Awareness of imbalance in one area will eventually bring the others back to balance.


Spiritual laws govern all the 7 chakras that cultivate greater happiness (yoga for sleep), harmony, and wellness in our lives and the world. As we have already mentioned, chakras get blocked due to stress, emotional or physical problems.
Let’s have a quick summary of the seven main chakras in our body.

Muladhara Chakra- Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is red and present at the perineum, base of our spine. Symbolized by a lotus with 4 petals, it is known as the chakra of stability, security, and basic needs.

The word mula means "root," and adhara means "support" or "base." This chakra is about discovering aspects of self. The function of Muladhara is concerned with our physical survival and earthly grounding.

Blockage of Root Chakra can cause behaviors ruled mainly by fear where everything looks like a potential risk, and it might be hard to feel safe in the world. If this chakra is overactive, we may become obsessed with being secure and resist changes.

Svadhisthana Chakra – Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is deep orange and present between the base of our spine and the navel. The symbol is composed of a circle with 6 petals and a crescent moon. It is known as the chakra of creativity and sexuality.
The word sva means "self," and shthana means “place." This chakra is in association with the emotional body, sensuality, and creativity. Deeply connected to creation, joy, and passion, Svadhisthana Chakra is barely below our belly button.

The sacral chakra is the driving force for the enjoyment of life through the senses. This powerful chakra marks the movement and flows in our emotions and thoughts. Imbalance can cause the feeling of numbness, lack of sexual desire and belief of stuck in a particular mood.

Manipura Chakra- Navel Chakra

The Naval Chakra is golden yellow and present between our belly button and diaphragm. The Manipura Chakra has a lotus with 10 petals that represent the ten pranas, which control and nourish all functions of our body.

In Sanskrit the word Mani means "gem," and Pura means "city." It is often known as the city of jewels. The chakra deals with self-confidence and self-esteem ( importance of self esteem). It is about asserting ourselves in a group, how we state our identity in a societal structure.

When this chakra is not functioning correctly, that means we may become passive and indecisive. If this is overactive,  it can make us aggressive and domineering.

Anahata Chakra- Heart Chakra

The emerald green color denotes the Heart Chakra or Anahata. The shape is in a crescent with 12 petals of the lotus. In Sanskrit, the word Anahata means “unstuck, unhurt, and unbeaten." It is present in the centre of our chest that represents the wellspring of love, warmth, compassion, and joy.

Anahata Chakra in our body represents the ability to love, find beauty, and compassion in the smallest things in the world. The chakra is an embodiment of self-love, altruism, and generosity. The energy of this chakra allows us to recognize us as part of something more substantial.

When the Heart Chakra is open, it means that we are not loving only others but also ourselves. We are creating a safe and supportive environment. The blockage in the chakra means excessive jealousy and cold-heartedness.

Vishuddha Chakra- Throat Chakra

Vishuddha is the fifth primary chakra, which is in the blue colour. It includes a circle with 16 petals. The silver crescent within the circle is symbolic of nada, pure cosmic sound. The Throat Chakra in our body represents self-expression and is in the region of the neck and shoulders.

It allows us to express our authenticity with our voice as a vehicle. It provides the ability to speak the higher truth.

When the Vishuddha is overactive, we speak more usually to domineer and become a bad listener. If this chakra works correctly, then we express ourselves and do it as an artist. When there is a blockage, we may become an introvert and shy.

Ajna Chakra- Third Eye Chakra

The colour of Ajna chakra is bright indigo and is on the forehead between the brows. Two inner petals symbolize it. The principle of openness and imagination drives the chakra.

The third eye chakra provides us with an insight to see both the inner and the outer world. It is the centre of processing all that is happening within and around us.

When this chakra is open, it means we have a good intuition. When this chakra is underactive, it means rigidity in our thinking. The awakening of Ajna enables us to open up to intuitive perception and intuitive sensibility.

Sahasrara Chakra – Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra is violet in colour and is symbolic of cosmic awareness and cosmic consciousness. The colour violet denotes oneness and spirituality. It is four fingerbreadths above the crown of the head.

The energy of this chakra invites inner peace, deep trust, and liberation within us. When this chakra is open, we can touch the higher most consciousness and transcend all limitations. We become unprejudiced and it makes us aware of the world and ourselves.

The blockage of the Sahasrara chakra means we are not aware of the spirituality and quite rigid in our thinking. A balanced Sahasrara chakra liberates the spirit and also keeps us rooted in the earth.
