Prevention of eating disorders with these easy steps

Sep 04, 2019

There are different types and reasons that cause eating disorders. We need to know those first in order to prevent the problem.

What are the causes of eating disorders?

Anorexia nervosa: This is the most known and common eating disorder. People who are obsessed with diet can develop this problem. Both male and female can suffer from this problem. However, studies have found that women tend to be affected more than men. People having this disorder are always in constant fear of gaining weight. Their aim in life is to lose weight no matter what. Even if they are underweight, they cannot understand it. They always want to be perfectly in shape and constantly monitoring their weight and calories. They are always in stress and don’t eat enough. Many even choose to take strong medicines to maintain themselves. They are always following a strict diet, fasting or doing excessive exercise even after being dangerously thin. Sometimes, they are even in denial of being underweight. This obsession and fear make a toll on their bodies and causes eating disorders. This is very harmful and damages the whole body. The victims experience many things like infertility, brittle hair and thinning the bones. In extreme cases, it causes heart, brain and other important organs’ failure or even death.

Bulimia nervosa: This is another type of disorder but is different from anorexia nervosa. This can develop in early adulthood or later. People with this disorder take a very large amount of food within a very short time. They cannot control and stop eating until they are extremely full. They regret later and to avoid gaining weight, they show purging symptoms such as using laxatives, forced vomiting, exercising or other methods. They also have a fear of being overweight (what causes obesity) and try very hard to maintain body shapes. But they don’t suffer from underweight problems like anorexia. Due to purging symptoms, they often face many complications such as dehydration, acid reflux, irritation, loss of essential minerals and hormonal disturbance. This can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Binge eating disorders: People having this disorder also go for a large amount of food and finish that in a very short time. They are not conscious of calories or overweight. They even have food when they are not hungry at all. They hardly have any control over their appetite. They don't show any purging symptom. Due to excess weight gain, they face many medical complications.

Pica: This is a very strange and uncommon eating disorder. People with this disorder crave for non-food substances. Pregnant women (Prenatal Yoga), children or people having mental problems can develop this problem. Pregnant women normally face this due to the change in hormones. This goes away after the delivery. It resolves for children after a certain age. But if it doesn’t, the doctor’s advice is needed.

Genetic eating disorders: Eating disorders can be caused by genetic factors. New studies have found that eating disorders can be caused by those if they are born with certain genotypes. Someone can be affected with eating disorder problem if they have a family history with eating disorders. There is a new term named epigenetics. More exploration and research is needed for that.

Trauma: Any violent or severe traumatic experience can cause eating disorders. Any survivor from mental, physical or sexual abuse suffers from low esteem. They struggle with displeasure, shame, feeling of guilt, lack of self-control and body dissatisfaction. Eating disorders can be the cause of these intense emotions. Because of the trauma, sometimes they have a tendency of inflicting self-harm or self-punishment. An eating disorder can happen with children who face bullying in school or other public places. They lose self-control and experience overeating or eating less.

Children always follow their parents’ footsteps. So fine dining and encouraging eating healthy balanced meal in time are needed. Don't discuss much dieting in front of your kids. This will grow a fear of food in them.

Nowadays, lots of promotions and advertisements with attractive models are there for dieting and weight loss program on TV or on the internet. So, teachers and parents should talk to the children openly. Education about good health and proper way of dieting is needed in educational institutions and in our homes. The bad side of starvation or eating less should be discussed regularly.

Always try to know whether your child is facing any problems or not. Parents support is needed to make them mentally strong especially during the teenage period. Don’t criticize your kids for their appearances. Always talk about inner beauty instead of outer beauty. Try to boost their self-confidence and make them feel special no matter how they are. Don’t compare your child with others. Don’t encourage competition among siblings. Don't show insecurity or disappointment because of your child appearance or achievement. Discourage others to talk about these in front of your kids as well.
Mental health is equally important to stay healthy. So, if you or any of your closed one’s face stress, depression or anxiety, don’t hesitate to seek experts help.
