Yoga – The Way to Back Pain Relief

Jul 20, 2019

Back pain can either manifest itself in a quick or slow manner. No matter how it introduces itself to you, this pain can prevent you from moving fluently and performing your daily tasks. In fact, certain cases of back pain can even prevent a person from sleeping.

There are many possible causes of back pain. However, several people suffer from it due to tightened muscles around the spine and certain areas of the back, and many attest to the fact that it is due to their posture.
It is because of these that back problems, sufferers have turned to natural ways of curing their ailments, and this is where Yoga comes in.

Yoga and Back Pain

Yoga is not just a tool that relaxes the mind. It offers a lot of benefits that help people gain relief from back pain. It is due to this that several experts are recommending Yoga as a solution for back pain/back problems, especially those that are related to the muscles around the back and spine, and those that may be associated with stress.

What are the benefits of Yoga?

We all know that Yoga has a number of benefits but are they, in any way, related to your back pain? The answer is a big Yes! In fact, here are some of the things that Yoga offers.

  • Balance, Body Alignment and Posture – There are many Yoga-poses that you can learn easily. Many of these poses are designed to help train your body to attain better balance and posture. Through Yoga, you gain a better alignment of your head, shoulders, and back. This takes away undue pressure from your lumbar area. It’s common knowledge that poor posture and balance is actually one of the causes of back pain and Yoga provides the solution to pain by teaching you how to observe proper posture while relaxing at the same time.

  • Muscle Strengthening – There are certain muscle groups that are responsible for maintaining proper posture; and these same muscles, when strengthened, can greatly help in alleviating back pain or even getting rid of it for good. Several Yoga poses are actually done in order to strengthen your back and your abdominal muscles. These are the groups of muscles that support the spine. Making them stronger provides better spine support, thereby reducing pain or avoiding it.

  • Body Awareness – Yoga increases your awareness, especially on the limitations of your body. Through this better body awareness, Yoga teaches you how to move properly as well as avoid certain movements that may put you at risk to injury or getting strained resulting in back pain. Through better body awareness, you will know what movements to do and what to avoid so that you can either prevent or get rid of back pain.

  • Improved State of Mind – It is said that a negative state of mind can magnify the back problem. This is because being negative puts you in a position that is more prone to stress and unhelpful emotions. By performing Yoga, you become more relaxed, improving your state of mind to the point where you become less stressed, which can help you deal with your back pain more effectively.

Yoga Poses to Help Get Rid of Back Problems

  • Cobra Pose – This Yoga pose helps by relaxing your spine and back muscles, as well as strengthening your abdominal muscles. Do this by lying down flat on your stomach. Place your palms underneath your shoulders, while your elbows are pointing upwards. Relax your body and use your arms to push downwards in order to arch your back. For optimum results, hold this pose for 15 seconds allowing it to stretch the muscles in your abdominal area, before going back to your starting position.

  • Yoga Cat Cow Pose – Get on the ground mimicking the position of a cat or a cow. Your knees should be under your hips while your wrists are positioned under your shoulders. Make sure to maintain balance as you look up to make your stomach follow a motion towards the floor. Inhale while you do this. After this, move your chin towards your chest as you exhale, drawing your tummy towards the spine and arching your back to the ceiling. As you do this routine, focus on maintaining awareness of every part of your body that is moving. Do this in a fluid motion for a minute.

  • Sphinx Yoga Pose – The Sphinx Pose for Yoga is said to cure and prevent back pain/back problems by improving the condition of your buttocks and spine. It helps relieve stress as well as stretches your abdomen, shoulders, and chest. To perform it, you should start by lying down on your tummy. Make your abdomen flat and your legs extended and position your elbows under your shoulders while keeping the palms of your hands facing down. Lift your head and upper torso slowly using your arms and focus on your lower abdominals in supporting your back. Keep facing forward and perform the Sphinx Yoga Pose for 5 minutes for best results. Yoga Pose Knee to Chest – This Yoga pose helps by stretching the hamstring. You can start by lying flat on your back. Relax and slowly bring one of your knees up towards the direction of your chest. Pull your knee as close to your chest as you comfortably can by placing your hands under it. Hold this Yoga position for 15 seconds, before you gently release the knee and perform it on the other knee.

These are just some of the Yoga poses that can help you get rid of your back pain/back problems. Choose one or two of the routines first before going through more. Select the ones that are more comfortable for you to follow, especially if it is going to be your first time. Once you become more accustomed to doing all these, you can move on to more Yoga poses out there. With Yoga, you will not only attain peace in your mind but you will also be able to find back pain relief the natural way.
