Hatha yoga

Hatha yoga is the physical practice of yoga that encourages work with posture, breath, and cleansing practices to prepare the body for meditation. The name Hatha yoga derives from the word ‘Ha’, meaning sun, and ‘Tha’ meaning moon, denoting the union of opposites. ‘Hatha’ also means force or determined effort, and ‘yoga’ translates as joining together or union. Therefore the meaning of Hatha yoga implies that a lot of strength and discipline is required to unify opposing forces, bringing together body and mind.

Hatha yoga first appeared in the 9th or 10th century, differing from existing practices of yoga as Hatha practitioners gave more importance to the physical aspect of practice. Although preceding yoga practices and Hatha yoga shared the common goal of controlling the mind and reaching a state of bliss or enlightenment, Hatha practitioners held the belief that this could be more easily achieved by means of various physical practices. It is from these beliefs that the physical asana practice the world now embraces came from. A Hatha yoga class today includes a variety of non strenuous asanas that are held for an extended period of time whilst practicing deep breathing techniques.

The course program

This teacher training approaches Hatha yoga traditionally as described in the ancient text, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. You will practice and experience the physical and spiritual teachings of this ancient system of yoga with an emphasis on awareness, breath, and ways in which to bring this practice and philosophy into your daily life.

The 200-hour Hatha yoga teacher training course includes the practice and study of a variety of traditional Hatha yoga poses. As well as asana, the course includes kriyas (cleansing practices), pranayama (breathwork), meditation and philosophy, as well as alignment and adjustment to ensure a fully holistic approach. It is said that the best way to teach is from your own experience, and this course will give you a true understanding of how each of the traditional Hatha yoga practices impacts your mind, body, and spirit.

The Jivan Chakra 200-hour Hatha teacher training course provides an environment dedicated to students’ growth and practice, and prepares participants with the tools and confidence necessary to teach and inspire their own students. The course is open to all levels of practitioner whether beginner, intermediate or advanced and will enable you to build a strong foundation for your teaching and personal practice.

The orientation meeting is held on the first day of the course, but you are welcome to arrive earlier to familiarize yourself with the area and refresh and revitalize after traveling before the course begins. Please note that accommodation and classes before the course are not included in the course fees, and should be arranged separately as appropriate. At the orientation meeting, you will meet your fellow classmates and the teachers will outline the course schedule and material, locations of classes and answer any other questions about the course.

Retreat location

Rishikesh, known as the yoga capital of the world, is a town based in the beautiful foothills of the Himalayan mountains. The city is surrounded by hills of the jungle, hidden temples, and shrines, and the great river Ganges which runs through the center, creating a spiritually charged setting that has attracted yogis, spiritual seekers, gurus, and sages since ancient times. Now, Rishikesh is home to the week-long International Yoga Festival every March, and pilgrims as well as tourists still flock to the area which is abundant with ashrams, yoga, and meditation classes. A dip in the holy Ganges is said to purify and cleanse past karmas, and the air is charged with spiritual energy conducive to meditation. Indeed, it is said that by meditating in Rishikesh, one can achieve ‘moksha,’ which is liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth.

Jivan Chakra Foundation is situated in Ram Jhula, in the Swarg Ashram area. Ram Jhula is dotted with shops, cafes, chai stands, and yoga ashrams, the well-known Parmarth Niketan is one of them. On rest days from your courses, a trip to browse the local stalls for shawls, incense, mala beads, and ayurvedic medicines, followed by a stop for chai or freshly squeezed juice by the river, is always welcomed. Inevitably, you will end up in conversation with fellow yogis and travelers at the local restaurants. Aside from yoga and spirituality, Rishikesh is also a famous hub for adventure sports and outdoor activities including trekking, white water rafting, bungee jumping, and camping. As such, you will never run out of activities to try during your stay here.

Things to Do

There is much to do in the area including browsing through local shops of Indian clothes, Ayurvedic products and books, treating yourself to a massage, or simply exploring the surrounding landscape - jungle clad hills, nearby waterfalls and beautifully situated temples are all possibilities. For days off there are plenty of delicious local cafes and restaurants, chai stands and juice houses. Inevitably you will end up meeting fellow yoga students and striking up a conversation in the relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

The course fees include two full meals per day and one snack with tea in the afternoon (except on rest days). The food is delicious, vegetarian, and made with love. The menu is designed to be light and sattvic to best keep your body nourished and strong for your yoga practice. Ingredients are locally sourced fresh from the markets, and meals are prepared in the kitchen daily.

Brunch consists of seasonal fruits including pineapple, watermelon, papaya, pomegranate, and bananas. Also served are muesli, yogurt, honey, homemade nut butter, porridge, toast, and a traditional savory Indian option so no one goes hungry. The dinner menu changes from evening to evening but favorite dishes include lentil and chickpea dals, mixed vegetable curries, salad, tofu, Indian style spiced potatoes, rice, chapatti, and occasionally something Western for a taste of home. Desserts including rice pudding, halva, and chocolate balls are sometimes provided and always go down a treat.

If you have any dietary requirements please inform Jivan Chakra Foundation so that they may ensure there are adequate options for you at mealtimes.
