Brain wellness through three Samahita keys

Samahita’s brain health upgrade program, Samahita Retreat’s classes, food, and support, and Samahita’s natural environment are keys for a total brain health upgrade to improve sleep, brain function, and start or enhance a meditation practice.

Your brain is involved in everything you do. Its health is vital to how you feel, think, age, perform, love, learn, and share. Circulation to and through your brain, known as cerebral blood flow as well as the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, indicates how well your brain performs and subsequently how you feel. You might be looking in several places to improve your health or fix what is bothering you. To do so, you must upgrade your brain’s health.

A typical day of the BHU program involves all the classes in our Yoga Core Cycle Program. which can include a morning indoor cycle (7am), breath class (7.30 am), yoga asana class (8.30-10.00am), followed by a break for breakfast and lunch, then a brain health session, an infrared therapy session, check in with a senior teacher, then afternoon fitness (4 pm), cycle (4.30 pm) and gentle yoga class (5 pm), dinner, and evening meditation (7.30pm).

The flow of elements in a brain health upgrade session

  • Step one

Light therapy to enhance your cellular energy level, so you feel better and your brain can work better. When your brain works better, you will do everything with much greater involvement and energy.

  • Step two

Brainwave modulation through audio-visual entrainment so you enter complete relaxation and cultivate the meditator’s mind. AVE stimulates certain brainwave states, in particular, the alpha range, to improve brain function, reduce inflammation in the brain, help you think better, and behave nicer.

  • Step three

A targeted meditation session with biofeedback to let you know the state of your mind and how you are actually doing as you sit and attempt meditative practice.

  • Step four

One-on-one sitting and guidance with one of Samahita’s senior teachers, discussion on anything that may have arisen through the session, and support to help understand the process and keep at it.

Mitochondria enhancement with red light and near-infrared light therapy

Samahita was purpose-built to function as a retreat center dedicated to your vitality, well-being, and relaxation. The variety of private and shared room options reflect that. The rooms are set back from the main beachfront facilities perfect for quiet contemplation and relaxation.

The eco-friendly buildings make use of cross-ventilation, natural lighting, rainwater harvesting, and offer both mosquito screens, fans, and air conditioning. They have rooms for the single traveler, couples or friends, as well as loft-style accommodation that is ideal for families or two people sharing. Regardless of which room you stay in, the beach, pool, and practice spaces are seconds away.

Private room (suitable for singles or couples)

Maximum capacity is two adults, one child. The room has 35 square meters of personal space, including a private balcony. It has a queen-size bed with individual reading lamps and the built-in shelf space at the headboard. Also included is a large writing desk (2.5 meters), bookshelves, storage cabinet that can be locked and can accommodate large laptops, hot-water kettle, medium-size fridge, built-in wardrobe with sufficient space for luggage, ceiling fans, and air conditioning. There is a fully equipped bathroom with a large shower area and room for clothes hanging and drying.

Semi-private room (suitable for the family of four or two people sharing)

Guests can enjoy approximately 25 square meters of personal space, including a private balcony. Room features include a queen-size bed with individual reading lamps, a writing desk, bookshelves, lockable storage cabinet, hot-water kettle, medium-size fridge, built-in wardrobe, ceiling fans, and air conditioning. The bedroom section of these rooms is private and includes a dedicated entrance as well as direct access to a fully furnished bathroom, which is shared between two rooms.

Shared two-bedroom loft (suitable for two people sharing or family of four)

This room has approximately 50 square meters of personal space, which includes a private balcony. It is split-level with a loft. Each bedroom has its own private space. There is a fully equipped bathroom shared by both bedrooms. Some of these rooms are equipped with an outdoor rain shower.

Each bedroom has a queen-size bed with individual reading lamps and a personal built-in shelf space at the headboard. Also included are a large writing desk, bookshelves, and storage cabinet that can be locked and can accommodate even large laptops, a hot-water kettle, and a medium-size refrigerator. The loft also has two wardrobes with sufficient space for luggage, two ceiling fans, and air conditioning.

Food

During this holiday, you will be served daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Samahita serves mainly vegetarian food, fish three or four days a week, and eggs a few times during the week at breakfast. For those that do not take fish or eggs, there is always an alternative food option. There is no other type of meat products.

Samahita has self-service tea and coffee near the juice bar. You can help yourself any time to tea and coffee, along with sugar, milk, or soy milk. During the program, you will be served full brunch and dinner buffets and mineral drinking water. If you prefer, you can order an espresso or cappuccino at the juice bar though this is a billed item.

Gillian Breetzke

Gill was born in South Africa and has lived in the UK, Ireland and Asia. She began her international teaching career in Inner city London schools, then on to Dublin and Yangon. She now combines her love of yoga and music in Koh Samui, a unique transformational place. She began her daily practice of yoga in 2004, training with Paul Dallaghan and Richard Freeman, and is Yoga Alliance (500RYT) and 1100 hour Centered Yoga Certified. Samahita has always been a welcoming, transformative space for her and in early 2016 she was grateful to fully embrace this magical place and call it home.

Daniel Stringer

Daniel began practicing Yoga in his home town Bristol, U.K. in 2003. He traveled to Mysore, India in 2006 to study the Ashtanga Vinyasa system directly from the Jois family. From Mysore, he was led to Samahita in Koh Samui where he found his primary teacher Paul Dallaghan. He spent 10 years teaching in the vibrant yoga scene of Hong Kong at numerous studios including Pure Yoga and remains connected to the community. He is registered with Yoga Alliance at the ERYT 500 Level and as a Continuing Education Provider.

Sarah Pierroz

Sarah born in Canada, studying Art, Sciences, and Arts Education, and has traveled Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean Basin, and Asia for over a decade. She completed a Centered Yoga Teacher training in 2011 and has continued her studies in pranayama, yoga and Buddhist philosophy, and practical meditation techniques in more depth, under the main guidance of Paul Dallaghan and Sri. O.P. Tiwari. Sarah has over 1100 Centered Yoga Teacher Training hours, is certified as a TRX Personal Trainer and Schwinn Spin Instructor.

Ara Hwang

Ara was born and raised in Korea. She has traveled the world studying and working for the last 16 years. She is a certified Group Exercise Instructor, a certified Yoga Teacher with Paul Dallaghan, and has continued her education in Yoga Philosophy, and Pranayama. Ara is also a certified VTCT Massage Therapist Diploma Courses (600hour).

So Diawpradit

So was born and raised in Koh Phangan, Thailand. He has been at Samahita since 2009 and enjoys helping others reach their fitness goals. His vast experience in fitness and free-weight training, body weight resistance training, TRX, kettlebells, and passion for sports, such as Muay Thai, Football and running, will help you have an enjoyable and challenging session. Certified as an ACE Personal Fitness Trainer in 2014.

Alexandra Steyn

Alexandra is a certified personal trainer, health coach and yoga instructor from South Africa. Her health and wellness journey started with her completing her 500 hr Personal Training & Nutrition studies in Florida in 2014. Thereafter she started her online health & wellness coaching business whilst being a full-time personal trainer and group fitness instructor. Her yoga journey began when she completed her 300 hr Hatha yoga course and attended 200 hr Ashtanga & Vinyasa training in India.

Rebecca Newell

REBECCA NEWELL Rebecca has been working in the wellness industry since 1996. Initially inspired by her own curiosity and a compelling desire to live a healthier, happier life, her journey has been a continuous exploration of many different facets of wellness, while activating her own personal growth in the process. She is a holistic health coach, yoga teacher and Reiki practitioner. Discovering Samahita in 2011 was an integral part of both her professional studies and personal expansion, offering an exceptional blend of retreat, education, connection and inner reflection.

Driving directions from Koh Samui

  • From the Koh Samui ring road 4169, take road 4173 at the Namuang waterfall intersection.
  • Follow the road for three kilometers until the four-way intersection at Ban Thale.
  • Then turn right on to road 4170 towards Laem Sor Pagoda or Thong Krut.
  • Continue for approximate one kilometer.
  • Then turn left where you see signs for Mor Din restaurant, Easytime resort, and Samahita Retreat.
  • After 700 meters, you will arrive at the end of the road on the beach and the location of Samahita Retreat.
  • The reception is right on the beach while the guest accommodations are on the opposite of the beach.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Samui Airport (USM).

Arrival by train and ferry

Trains for Surathani (which actually stop in Phun Phin, 14 kilometers west of Surathani) leave from Bangkok's Hualamphong station. The 6:20 p.m. (rapid) and the 7:15 p.m. (express) trains are most convenient, as they arrive at 5:28 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., allowing you plenty of time to catch an 8:00 a.m. boat to Koh Samui.

The bus or ferry journey will be an additional three hours once you have arrived in Surathani. Songserm offers a joint ticket (train, bus, and boat) for around 1,300 THB, which lands you in Koh Samui by 11:00 a.m. The ferry journey from Donsak pier is one and a half hour long. Donsak is 30 minutes from Surathani.
