The Loyfa BetterLife Retreat is designed to clear away the confusion of your life, to gently bring you into presence. Our program of meditation and yoga is accessible to all, from absolute beginner to experienced practitioner. Our approach to yoga sits in the foundations of traditional Hatha rooted in principles of softness, stability, and comfort.

Through practiced attention to breath and body, we are able to calm the speed of everyday life. As we do this we set aside the drama of the past and anxiety of the future and just sit with who we are and where we are, right now.

Modern science supports the yogic practice as a direct route to our nervous system and as such our neural pathways. As we connect deeper with the body we teach is better ways to respond to pressures of modern living. At BetterLife our deeply therapeutic retreat will pause the go button, surround you in the majesty of tropical nature and bring you to a place of inner awareness. It is within this place of awareness that you can access the tools you need to create a more balanced life with yourself and the world around you.

BetterLife and Buddha

Although Loyfa BetterLife is not strictly a Buddhist focused program, it is grounded in the basic principles of what the Buddha taught over 2,500 years ago about life’s sufferings and how to end those sufferings. Removing the religious elements, we’ve swayed focus to “The Four Noble Truths” which state that life is suffering, but that there is a way to end suffering. We offer twice-weekly Dharma Talks with our Dharma Patron, Prah Olarn. Participants get the opportunity to chat about life with a Thai Buddhist monk and to learn how such ancient teachings might apply to modern life.

The Program

The BetterLife retreat program offers a daily schedule of classes and sessions aimed to deeply unwind and relax. As you move into a deeper state of presence with both yourselves and the world around you, you are more able to see clearly and make better decisions about how to live your lives.

The classes are gentle and designed with both the beginner and the experienced practitioner in mind. The approach to yoga sits in the foundations of traditional Hatha, a practice comprised of physical poses (asana) rooted in principles of softness, stability, and comfort. As the practice expands from this place of inner stillness we cleanse and strengthen the body and mind, opening the channels of energy and allowing them to flow freely.

Afternoon classes guide the practitioner to other forms of practice. The Nidra Meditation sessions offer the opportunity to experience deep guided meditation. Translated as the ‘yoga of sleep’ this is an approach that can be accessed by anyone. As the individual lets go of outside distractions they are gently and expertly guided into deeper levels of consciousness. This practice provides tremendous benefits to the body, mind, and brain.

Also offered at this time is the Mindful Breathing classes. Advanced yogic techniques are broken down in a simple, digestible language. One of the most powerful ways you can integrate yogic knowledge into your everyday life is to understand the breath.

At BetterLife, we are interested in how ancient wisdom meets modern life. We are privileged to offer twice-weekly talks with the Dharma Patron, Prah Ajahn Olarn. This is a unique opportunity to listen to an authentic Buddhist monk discuss how Buddhist teachings can make sense in today's world. A charming and enigmatic individual, his talks are guaranteed to inspire!

We will also be offering a special series of Sunday talks where guest speakers will be invited to share informative and inspiring approaches to living life.

Class Details

Morning Meditation Flow

The day begins in silence within our beautiful ocean view shala set amidst the trees. Participants are guided through a 45 min session of practice which includes both seated and walking styles. Techniques will be introduced that work with the breath, body and mind.

With this approach to mediation, one learns to integrate meditation into every aspect of daily life.

Awakening Hatha Yoga

Our experienced instructors will guide you through a one hour class of awakening for the mind, body and spirit. A typical class will start with a gentle warm-up with a focus on breath, advance to more physical poses and end with a short period of deep relaxation.

Hatha Yoga is one of the oldest forms of yoga, originating in India some 2000 years ago. In modern times it is considered to be one of the more gentle forms of yoga, focusing on static poses, sometimes mixed with gentle flowing movements. Although great for beginners it can still be physically and mentally challenging. Our teachers will offer variations to the poses, which suit the differing levels of experience and flexibility within the class.

Restorative Yoga

We all need rest, whether we are recovering from physical illness, mental burnout or simply trying to bring balance to our busy lives. Restorative yoga is just as the name states, restorative. It aims to bring one back to a balanced state of health by supporting the body to fully and completely rest.

A Restorative Yoga sequence typically involves a smaller number of poses than other classes, supported by props that allow you to relax and deeply rest. Held for 5 minutes or more, restorative poses include light twists, seated forward folds, and gentle backbends.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is a quiet and contemplative practice, working with what the Taoist philosophy refers to as the yin aspects of ourselves; the stable, unmoving, hidden aspect of things. Yin yoga works with the yin tissues in our bodies, the connective tissues (tendons, ligament and fascia). These tissues respond well to slow and steady practice, so in this style of yoga, poses are held for a longer period of time, allowing the muscles to relax around the tissues, releasing deeply held tension in the body and mind.

This is an excellent choice of yoga for those who wish to work on deeper flexibility, joint mobility as well as mental health issues related to stress and anxiety.

Nidra meditation

Referred to as the ‘yoga of sleep, Nidra is a guided meditation that takes the practitioner into the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness, inducing a hypnagogic state, that which comes just prior to falling asleep.

Research supports this practice as beneficial in stress reduction, anxiety, and sleep disorders as well as enhanced memory and improved brain function.

Mindful breathing

The way in which we breathe has a much deeper connection to the body, mind, and thoughts than most of you realize. The breath is the only voluntary and involuntary body function that you have, revealing your unconscious emotional, mental, and physical patterns.

In the yoga tradition, the breath is said to carry a person's life force. Learn how to tap into yours in your daily mindful breathing class. A variety of techniques will be introduced both in theory and practice. Add a few more tools into your well-being toolbox with this wonderful class.

Qi Gong

Qigong is a form of gentle exercise composed of movements that are repeated a number of times, often stretching the body, increasing fluid movement (blood, synovial and lymph) and building awareness of how the body moves through space.

This practice is excellent for enhancing mental clarity. Strengthening and balancing the energy of your mind enhances your ability to detect subtle nuances and to perceive the world and its patterns at ever-increasing levels of complexity.

The collection of cottages and suites, woven within a beachfront coconut grove, are linked by jungle walkways, where cottages nestled within the hillside enjoy partial sea views, while suites offer direct beach access.

Each room has its own bathroom with shower and an additional sink outside of the shower/toilet room for convenience; double bunk beds and sleeps four.

Loyfa Standard and Luxury Dormitory

This space is a step above the average. Each guest will be treated to a cozy bunk bed style, bedchamber that has been meticulously considered for comfort and convenience.

Inside each bedchamber you will find a dimmable room light, a reading lamp, two electrical outlets, a shelf for charging your phone and personal items; a hook, hanging rod and privacy curtains.

Large, lockable cabinets are provided for each guest. The standard rooms contain 4 beds and one bathroom. Luxury dorms sleep 6 and have two individual shower and bathroom areas. Our BetterLife village provides comfortable seated areas, restaurant and juice bar.

Kids Creative Movement Class

Twice weekly we offer specialized classes for children aged 7 and up. These classes are lead by a certified education and yoga teacher. Prepare to explore the body and mind with fun dance and yoga activities. Relax by the pool or join the kids for some extra special bonding time.


Daily brunch buffet and dinner are included in the price. One fresh juice and fresh coconut per day are also included. The delicious and healthy cuisine utilizes the abundant local and organic produce. The menu has been created with the influence of many different cultures

Nancy Huettig

Nancy is one of our most valued instructors with many years of experience in teaching hatha yoga. Nancy’s calm voice takes you on a journey of inner peace, connection to your true self and awareness of your breath. Her teaching is from the heart and brings you to your sacred place, inner calm so that you don’t have to look anywhere else. Nancy is also our resident Ayurvedic Health Consultant offering consultations and treatments.

Anja Maier

Anja is a Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 teacher who has studied, practiced and taught yoga around the world. In fact she speaks four different languages! Anja is well-rounded in all styles of yoga, but we particularly love her for her deeply nurturing sessions in Yin and Restorative classes.

Robert Brown

Robert is an India Yoga Alliance 500 hr certified instructor. Robert has a beautiful, warm, energized style of teaching. He is particularly passionate about working with the breath and leads our mindful breathing classes.

Kathrin Lindauer

Kathrin joins our BetterLife team as our specialized Nidra Meditation teacher. Kathrin holds Satyananda Yoga Nidra® Basic + Advanced training (79+79h) from Dr. Nalini Sahay (Bihar School of Yoga). This is the leading school of training in Nidra. Kathrin is also a certified 400 hr hatha yoga instructor. She is a sensitive teacher who has a particular skill in holding space for others.

Ivan Pereda

Ivan is a passionate hatha yoga instructor with a particular focus on tantra yoga. His classes focus on inner stillness and energy. His guided meditation are not to be missed. He has a special skill in bringing his students into presence.

Victoria Hartung

Viktoria is a Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 hr teacher as well as a certified Yoga Therapist. She brings a wealth of knowledge into the classroom and a presence that affords an atmosphere of safety and trust. Viktoria is one of our most treasured teachers, for both her smile and her depth of understanding of mind-body-spirit.
