Mission and philosophy

Yoga Here & There's mission is to make the world understand that a hug, a deep breath in, a prayer, and a handstand are all yoga. Yoga Here & There believes that yoga is suitable for people of all ages, sizes, conditions, and backgrounds. And yes, yoga can be challenging but not because you must be able to stand on your head (which you really don’t need to).

Though people remain a student forever themselves, Yoga Here & There intends to spread a genuine love for the eight limbs of yoga across the globe by teaching a variety of styles and paths of yoga. They want to contribute to a sustainable world where people can live with more respect, empathy, and love for each other and the planet. They do this by creating a safe space where they welcome everybody.

While upholding the highest quality standards, Yoga Here & There aims to make yoga accessible for everyone. The main objective is to show that there is no one-yoga-size-fits-all when it comes to practicing nor teaching. What you practice, may not be the right practice for someone else and may not be what you need later. They encourage you to always have an open and flexible mind.

Yoga Here & There, therefore, chooses to give you a broad view of what yoga can be, while making sure you get a solid training in the foundational concepts of yoga. Their hope is that the 200-hour training encourages you to continue searching and studying after the program, designing your yoga journey according to your needs, and in turn, supporting your students to do the same.

This multistyle program encompasses a variety of traditional and modern asana styles including their relevant alignment and adjustment methods. However, it also gives you an insight into the spiritual and philosophical aspects of yoga, motivating you to look beyond the physical practice. Yoga Here & There emphasizes teaching practice because they want you to find your own voice and be able to hold a safe space with confidence when you interact with students. However, this program is also suitable for you if you are simply looking to deepen your own practice and knowledge of yoga, without the intention of teaching.

A typical day looks more or less like this:

  • 06:00 - 08:00 Morning practice, asana, pranayama, and / or meditation
  • 08:00 - 09:00 Breakfast and break
  • 09:00 - 13:00 Lectures or workshops
  • 13:00 - 14:30 Lunch, break, and study time
  • 14:30 - 16:00 Lectures or workshops
  • 16:15 - 18:00 Evening practice, asana, pranayama, meditation and / or mindfulness
  • 18:00 Dinner and study

A 100% attendance is required for final certification. You have one day off a week, which amounts to three days off during the training. The course content is well above the Yoga Alliance minimum standards for the 200-hour yoga teacher training.

Morning practice

Each morning, you practice asana, meditation, and / or pranayama. These morning practices cover three dynamic yoga styles, which are Hatha, Ashtanga, and Vinyasa. While the focus of these morning sessions is for you to improve your practice, these classes are also an opportunity to observe how to run a class efficiently, safely, and inclusively in various ways.

Evening practice

Each evening, you practice some form of mindfulness that can include asana, meditation, pranayama. This could be for example Yin yoga, Restorative yoga, Dynamic meditation, yoga Nidra, or myofascial release. While the objective of these evening sessions is for you to enjoy some stress release and restorative practices, they are also a way to learn how to run slower-paced and mindful classes.

Analytical training

Aside from asana practice, Yoga Here & There provides in-depth presentations about various yoga styles. You delve into the history, philosophy, and lineage of the yoga style in question, into the technical aspects of the style (sequencing, typical alignments, use of props, and assists, etc.), and into the benefits and general contraindications for each practice. Yoga Here & There helps you understand which yoga style is appropriate for who and why. You learn the same about pranayama, meditation, and other yoga-related practices, such as kriyas and chanting.

Alignments and adjustments

During these workshops, you de- and reconstruct the most fundamental yoga asana. You pull each pose apart, learn the alignment which can vary per yoga style and the physical limitations. Teachers point out contraindications and the injury risks and go through various modifications for each pose, including with the use of props and introduce possible adjustments and assists. You get to practice all this with and on your fellow trainees.

Teaching methodology

This module gives you the general tools to lead a safe and engaging class or workshop. You discuss what yoga is and how yoga can mean something different to different people. Yoga Here & There gives you insight into the many different styles of yoga around the world. You get presentations on how to prepare a class, including classroom management, music playlists, safe practices, sequencing a flow, and how to cue and demonstrate. Yoga Here & There emphasizes how important it is for you to find your own voice, both in style and in volume and they show you how to engage, physically and verbally, in a safe and respectful way with your students.

In order to bring into practice everything you learn, you are given teaching assignments at least three times a week, culminating in a final teaching assessment in the last week. Yoga Here & There builds up your teaching experience from teaching a single asana in the first week to a complete class towards the end of the program. You learn how to closely observe your students and get the opportunity to experiment teaching in different asana styles, pranayama, meditation, and mindfulness practices. Yoga Here & There constantly encourages you to find your personal teaching style. Emphasis is put on safe practice, clear alignment cues, interaction with your students, and enjoyment of the class for you and your students.

Anatomy and physiology

In this module, you are presented with essential and basic knowledge about the human body and learn how it applies to yoga (asana) practice. You touch upon the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, and the fascial meridians. Yoga Here & There makes these classes as interactive as possible, with exercises, and games to give you a practical understanding of this scientific subject. Injury management and prevention in yoga are an important part of this subject. You also expand on yogic anatomy, the subtle body, prana, and extensively discuss the seven main chakras, the koshas, and the bandhas.

The philosophy module covers the fundamental concepts and scriptures of yoga philosophy. In many modern-day yoga schools, this aspect of yoga is often overlooked, reducing yoga to mere physical exercise. You do not need to be a spiritual hippie to find these classes, that cover many subjects and stories ranging from the Vedas to the Eight Limbs of Yoga, fascinating. Important texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras are just some of the topics you discuss.

Other subjects

To complete the program, Yoga Here & There offers several other subjects that are relevant to yoga. From 'Code of Conduct' to the 'Business Aspects of Yoga' and from 'Basic Sanskrit' to 'Yogic Lifestyle', they share many personal and professional experiences with you in order to make sure that their course is well-rounded, inclusive, and the best start for your journey along the path of teaching yoga.

Arrival and departure

Official check-in time is on day one at noon, but if you arrive earlier that day, it is not a problem. If your room isn’t available yet, you can chill by the pool or in the restaurant. The introduction circle takes place at 15:00 on day one and your attendance is required. Yoga Here & There takes this opportunity to get to know each other, introduce the teaching team and resort staff, as well as give out teaching materials and general information about the course, resort, and surroundings. From day two on, you start at 06:00. You wrap up the program on the evening of day 25 with a graduation ceremony. There are no more classes after that but dinner that evening and breakfast the next day are still included. Official check-out is on day 26.

Entry requirements

In Yoga Here and There's opinion, dedication and commitment are the most important requirements for applying and completing the 200-hour program. You may find the program rather intense if you have no previous yoga experience at all before starting the course. Still, they welcome all levels of practitioners. However, they recommend that once you have applied for the training, you practice asana, meditation, and pranayama as much as you can before joining them. Any prior experience is of great value during the training and since the program is quite full-on (from 06:00 until 18:00, six days a week), it is important to be in good physical and mental shape.

The resort itself consists of several cottages set back in a lush garden and a luxury dormitory, a triple room and two private rooms in the main building.

The cottages, built in the typical Balinese jogolo-style with coconut wood and palm leaves, have one king-size bed on the ground floor and two single beds on the upper level. All have air-con, open-air bathrooms and a veranda. They face the communal garden of the resort, which flourishes all year round and is perfectly manicured.

Retreat location

Amed is one of many little fishing villages that line the rugged east coast on this side of Bali, Indonesia. It is a quiet little town compared to the tourist hubs like Ubud and Seminyak. There are plenty of charming restaurants, warungs (local eateries), cafés with healthy and unhealthy food, a few mobile food carts, and heaps of small and slightly bigger shops and supermarkets. The main activities in Amed are scuba diving, free diving, some trekking, and yoga. This is also the place to catch a boat to the famous Gili islands.
